Democrat’s newest Senator Eludes the “Specter” of Defeat
A new Quinnipiac poll conducted from 4/29-5/3 has concluded that Pennsylvania’s support of Senator Arlen Specter went unchanged since his surprise defection last Wednesday. Amidst a shrinking moderate constituency, Specter made the switch last week, giving the Democrats a filibuster-proof 60 Senate seats, pending Al Franken’s victorious lawsuit and certification as Minnesota’s Junior Senator.
The poll showed Specter’s job approval rating to be 56 percent, with 36 percent disproving. In the survey, 52 percent of respondents had a favorable view of Specter compared to 34 percent who viewed him unfavorably. Most importantly, the poll found that Specter the Democrat would easily defeat former three-term U.S. Representative Pat Toomey by 20 points (53 percent vs. 33 percent) and possible Senate hopeful Tom Ridge by three points (46 percent vs. 43 percent).
Specter, a ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has been accused of selling out the GOP. But had his Republican constituency not become so conservative, he would still be a Republican, and given his numbers from the poll, it would appear as though Pennsylvania will ignore this most egregious of party fouls.

Let’s be honest, Sen. Specter has always been a Pennslyvania Republican, which means he’s always been closer to the Democrates than the average Republican.
